Our road trip in south New Zealand assured soul luring landscape, delectable wine and food of outstanding quality that was either straight from the soil, swimming an hour ago in the water or was gleefully grazing in the open. Our firsthand experience with great quality New Zealand food other than the cringy late night Mc Donalds burger was at the Valley Brewing company’s Brewery Cafe on our way to Wanaka from Christchurch. We loved this quaint little Beer Boutique and cafe’s food, beer and their friendly dog so much so that we planned to stop by once again on our way back to Christchurch and made sure to schedule our drive time such that we ended up at this particular cafe right around lunch time.
Only a mere one to one and a half hour drive from Christchurch with a giant sign announcing “FOOD” and an arrow leading to the cafe can be easily spotted on the highway in Geraldine heading towards and back from Queenstown, Dunedin, Mt cook Village or Wanaka. The highway barely has any food stops, except for a few in the villages which, in order to reach one needs to take a detour. However the Valley Brewing company was the only one we found was on our way after driving for miles and with a dedicated post, you know now that we are so glad we did.
Set amongst beautiful meadows for miles with a charming little restaurant and a beer shop, this family run brewery is a must visit if you get the chance. If you are not hungry for the food the place makes for a great coffee stop as well and try resisting their display of homemade cakes on stands and cookies in the jars if you can! After a hearty lunch of homemade soup of the day and fish and chips, their little outdoor patio was our became our favourite spot to sample six delicious, hand crafted beer from their brewery and for only 9 NZ dollars which is a great bargain. All while soaking in some spring sun and watching beautiful horses grazing in the meadows. Other than the scenic location and food, the beer and the sweet hosts are definitely the best part about this brewery.
If we could, we would have visited this cafe and brewery a lot more than twice, however, a road trip definitely contradicts that intention. After contemplating a lot I had to put down an entire post dedicated to this tucked away cafe as they are definitely worth looking out for and is a strong memory of our New Zealand road trip. And, how could I deprive you of all the drool worthy food pictures I had taken from my favourite place to eat at in New Zealand! You are welcome!
Below are a few pictures of the things we ordered and enjoyed with their prices for your reference.
Now after them drools, a treat for your eyes!
